The Roger Counter Foundation Limited is a guarantee company set up by the will of Roger Counter in 2008. The Foundation is a registered English charity with number 1128922 and is regulated by the Charity Commission. Roger left much of his UK estate to be applied for the charitable purpose of funding medical research into finding a cure for Burkitt’s lymphoma.
The trust is administered by a board of trustees chaired by Richard Bagley, a local solicitor together with Roger’s sister Judith Brown and Jonathan Ogden also a solicitor and old friend. The trustees meet regularly to review the trust’s purpose, consider funding proposals and appraise the investment performance of foundation assets.
Roger was a local Bournemouth boy who spent most of his life in the town. He assisted his parents, developing the family property business and retired in 2006 to enjoy an active retirement in the Swiss Alps. He was also known locally as a keen sailor who had crossed the Atlantic on several occasions. He helped many a yachtsman and woman to learn to sail in and around Poole harbour. Sadly Roger’s retirement was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of Burkitt’s lymphoma. He fought this illness with great courage and fortitude, whether in hospital or at home, in the depths of great pain and despair he never gave up. He never let it get him down. In that sense he has been and continues to be a great inspiration to others.
He wanted desperately to understand how this disease is caused and how it could be prevented or cured in the future. We may be a long way from meeting his objective but the Foundation is committed to:
